"And the young woman of the house," asked Dr. Hood, with huge and silent amusement, "what does she want?" "Why, she wants to marry him," cried Father Brown, sitting up eagerly. "That is just the awful complication." "It is indeed a hideous enigma," said Dr. Hood. "This young James Todhunter," continued the cleric, "is a very decent man so far as I know; but then nobody knows very much.

Chesterton portrays Father Brown as a short, stumpy Roman Catholic priest, with shapeless clothes, a large umbrella, and an uncanny insight into human evil. In "The Head of Caesar" he is "formerly priest of Cobhole in Essex, and now working in London." ..

Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Technical University of Braunschweig, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Gilbert Keith Chesterton started writing when he was a schoolboy and today his work is well-known all over the world. In spite of his literary accomplishments, he considered himself primarily a journalist. But he also wrote a hundred books, contributions to 200 books, hundreds of poems, five plays, five novels and more than two hundred short stories, including a popular series on “Father Brown” which I think is one of his greatest works. These stories on “Father Brown” have been written between 1911 and 1935 and are summarized in five books called “The Innocence of Father Brown”, “The Wisdom of Father Brown”, “The Incredulity of Father Brown”, “The Secret of Father Brown” and “The Scandal of Father Brown”. All the books “constitute a fascinating summary of Chesterton practising what he preached” 1 . In my work I will concentrate on the second Father Brown book called “The Wisdom of Father Brown”. It was published in 1914 and contains twelve stories on the priestdetective Father Brown. First I will give short summaries of the four stories I chose from the book and afterwards I will focus on the main character Father Brown, his attitudes and his development. To do this I will mainly give attention to the four stories I selected but also prove some of my statements by referring to one of the other stories. I will also compare Chesterton’s views with the attitudes of his figure Father Brown.

This volume contains the 53 stories of Father Brown, the beloved character created by English novelist G. K. Chesterton, who stars in 51 detective short stories (and two framing vignettes). Chesterton based the character on Father John O'Connor (1870-1952), a parish priest in Bradford who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922. Father Brown is a short, stumpy Roman Catholic Church priest, "formerly of Cobhole in Essex, and now working in London", with shapeless clothes and a large umbrella, and an uncanny insight into human evil. Unlike the more famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown's methods tend to be intuitive rather than deductive. This volume contains ALL OF FATHER BROWN STORIES, included the three stories left out of most collections: "The Donnington Affair" "The Vampire of the Village" "The Mask of Midas" . The following is the list of Father Brown stories included in this volume: 1. The Innocence of Father Brown, 1911 "The Blue Cross", The Story-Teller, September 1910; first published as "Valentin Follows a Curious Trail", The Saturday Evening Post, 23 July 1910 "The Secret Garden", The Story-Teller, October 1910. "The Queer Feet", The Story-Teller, November 1910. "The Flying Stars", The Saturday Evening Post, 20 May 1911. "The Invisible Man", The Saturday Evening Post, 28 January 1911. "The Honour of Israel Gow" (as "The Strange Justice", The Saturday Evening Post, 25 March 1911. "The Wrong Shape", The Saturday Evening Post, 10 December 1910. "The Sins of Prince Saradine", The Saturday Evening Post, 22 April 1911. "The Hammer of God" (as "The Bolt from the Blue", The Saturday Evening Post, 5 November 1910. "The Eye of Apollo", The Saturday Evening Post, 25 February 1911. "The Sign of the Broken Sword", The Saturday Evening Post, 7 January 1911. "The Three Tools of Death", The Saturday Evening Post, 24 June 1911. 2. The Wisdom of Father Brown (1914) "The Absence of Mr Glass" "The Paradise of Thieves" "The Duel of Dr Hirsch" "The Man in the Passage" "The Mistake of the Machine" "The Head of Caesar" "The Purple Wig" "The Perishing of the Pendragons" "The God of the Gongs" "The Salad of Colonel Cray" "The Strange Crime of John Boulnois" "The Fairy Tale of Father Brown" 3. The Incredulity of Father Brown (1926) "The Resurrection of Father Brown" "The Arrow of Heaven" "The Oracle of the Dog" "The Miracle of Moon Crescent" "The Curse of the Golden Cross" "The Dagger with Wings" "The Doom of the Darnaways" "The Ghost of Gideon Wise" 4.The Secret of Father Brown (1927) (framing story) "The Secret of Father Brown" "The Mirror of the Magistrate" "The Man with Two Beards" "The Song of the Flying Fish" "The Actor and the Alibi" "The Vanishing of Vaudrey" "The Worst Crime in the World" "The Red Moon of Meru" "The Chief Mourner of Marne" (framing story) "The Secret of Flambeau" 5. The Scandal of Father Brown (1935) "The Scandal of Father Brown" "The Quick One" "The Blast of the Book" "The Green Man" "The Pursuit of Mr Blue" "The Crime of the Communist" "The Point of a Pin" "The Insoluble Problem" "The Donnington Affair" (1914, outside of compilations) "The Vampire of the Village" (Strand Magazine, August 1936); included in later editions of The Scandal of Father Brown, we have included it in the same way in this volume) "The Mask of Midas" (1936)

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, Technical University of Braunschweig, course: The Detective Story Inside and Outside the Classroom, 8 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Gilbert Keith Chesterton started writing when he was still very young. He published hundreds of books and essays. His work consists of novels, short stories, poems and biographies. But today he is only known for his Father Brown stories and they are also the most widely read stories of all Chesterton’s writing. Furthermore, they are the form of art in which he was most successful. You can call them his masterpiece. The Father Brown Stories consist of five books. Two of them are pre-War. They “constitute a fascinating summary of Chesterton practising what he preached” (Hunter 1983, p.140). The first book of the Father Brown Stories is “The Innocence of Father Brown” consisting of twelve stories dealing with Father Brown. Then there is the “The Wisdom of Father Brown”, “The Incredulity of Father Brown”, “The Secret of Father Brown” and “The Scandal of Father Brown”. All these books were published between 1911 and 1935. In my work I will concentrate on the first collection of Father Brown Stories, “The Innocence of Father Brown” which was published in 1911 and was dedicated to Chesterton’s old friend Waldo D’Avigdor and his wife Mildred. From this collection I chose three stories (“The Queer Feet”, “The Hammer of God” and “The Sins of Prince Saradine”). I will give a summary of them and then I will compare them to find out differences or what is the same. After that I will talk about some striking elements in “The Innocence of Father Brown”. As Father Brown is the only character that counts in the Father Brown Stories I will characterise him and later on write of his attitudes and role in this book. With the help of what I found out, I will try to explain the title of “The Innocence of Father Brown”.
