In The Throne of Psyche, Marly Youmans sweeps back and forth between what is human and what is other, binding the two together or crossing the thresholds between them. A prize-winning writer of stories and novels, she pursues tales both otherworldly and earthy with passion and formal power in this eighth book, her second collection of poetry. The title poem⿿s narrative governs the entire collection in its yoking of Eros to Psyche. Psyche is the young girl brought in fear to a marriage chamber that transforms into forest as ⿿The little stars⿿ go ⿿shrieking through the wood⿿ and her childhood innocence is ⿿struck asunder.⿿ But she is more than mortal as she passes in and out of time: the child who hears a dryad prophesy, the goddess who sits on a throne or plays ⿿in the arms of Love / As starlight steadies in his perfect flesh,⿿ the figure of meditation and grief who walks along the broken palace walls of home, the bold adventurer who has been to hell and drunk the blood of memory in the place where all she once loved is now shadow. Elsewhere in these poems are other potent narratives and revelations where mortal flesh slams into death and transformation: a woman dances with God, the poet speaks in the form of a dryad, a sister transforms into a fish and swims away, a doll is cast out from home and overtaken by a demon, the otherworldly infiltrates the leastmost dust, and a new mother walks with Death in his forest. Such metamorphoses and broodings on the door ajar between human and other remind us that Marly Youmans is ⿿the best-kept secret among contemporary American writers. She writes like an angel⿿an angel who has learned what it is to be human⿿ (John Wilson, Books & Culture).

Andrew Staniland's prose-poem novel "The Beauty Of Psyche (2005)" is a retelling of the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche as a novel about imagination. The characters are played by actors, against a backdrop of paintings, models and sets. The story at times becomes a series of paintings and sculptures in an exhibition. And many of the references to people, films, theatre and other myths may or may not be imaginary too. Revised edition. "Reading this I felt the excitement and pleasure of those long Romantic poems by Keats, Shelley and Byron or even Pope and Milton but it's not 'like' any of them. It is not a modern version of a classic, it is a modern classic... It's a genuine literary work of art. A true contemporary classic. It's beautiful, it's intelligent and I don't imagine I'll ever read anything like it again." - Cally Phillips, indie e-book review

Why should Christians bother to read Carl Jung? He may be one of the most famous psychologists of the twentieth century, but are his views and ideas really compatible with Christian faith? While acknowledging some Christian suspicion of Jung, Ann Belford Ulanov and Alvin Dueck maintain that Jung's psychology can indeed enhance the life of faith.

The Human Psyche is a far reaching expose of human identity that seeks to unify the startling new insights gained from modern neuroscientific studies of higher consciousness, with insights gained from introspection and philosophy. In simple, straightforward prose and diagrammatic form it presents several new models of the generation of, and interactions between, the neural centers that are responsible for thought, emotion and mood. It will be of particular interest to neuroscientists, neurologists, biologists, mental health professionals, students of religion and philosophers and indeed all those fascinated by human behavior, its origins in the animal world and its implications for our future. The Human Psyche reminds us that we live in a time when science finally has significant answers about the true nature and origins of human behavior a perspective that heralds a new era that will inevitably see the dissolution of many hallowed, though plainly stagnant institutions and the establishment of a new world.

Just as a little child holds out its hands to catch the sunbeams, to feel and to grasp what, so its eyes tell it, is actually there, so, down through the ages, men have stretched out their hands in eager endeavour to know their God. And because only through the human was the divine knowable, the old peoples of the earth made gods of their heroes and not unfrequently endowed these gods with as many of the vices as of the virtues of their worshippers. As we read the myths of the East and the West we find ever the same story. That portion of the ancient Aryan race which poured from the central plain of Asia, through the rocky defiles of what we now call “The Frontier,” to populate the fertile lowlands of India, had gods who must once have been wholly heroic, but who came in time to be more degraded than the most vicious of lustful criminals. And the Greeks, Latins, Teutons, Celts, and Slavonians, who came of the same mighty Aryan stock, did even as those with whom they owned a common ancestry. Originally they gave to their gods of their best. All that was noblest in them, all that was strongest and most selfless, all the higher instincts of their natures were their endowment. And although their worship in time became corrupt and lost its beauty, there yet remains for us, in the old tales of the gods, a wonderful humanity that strikes a vibrant chord in the hearts of those who are the descendants of their worshippers. For though creeds and forms may change, human nature never changes.

Understanding life through its origins reveals the groundwork underlying the differentiations of its autonomous generative matrixes. Following the primogenital matrix of generation, the three generative matrixes of the specifically human sense of life establish humanness within the creative human condition as the existential sphere of sharing-in-life.
