Tarzan and the Tarzan Twins, with Jad-bal-ja, the Golden Lion was originally published in 1936, as a children's book. Because of this reason, it is usually left off the list of the main Tarzan series. In relation to other Tarzan stories, this book and 'The Tarzan Twins' fall between 'Tarzan and the Ant Men' and 'Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle' chronologically, as the initial part (The Tarzan Twins) was published between these two novels. The second part (Tarzan and the Tarzan Twins, with Jad-bal-ja, the Golden Lion) confirms their placement in approximately this period, as it introduces a family that figures prominently in 'Tarzan and the Lost Empire', the next book after 'Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle'; specifically, it features Tarzan's first meeting with Doctor Karl von Harben, with whom he is already acquainted in Empire.

A great safari had come to Africa to make a movie. It had struggled across the veldt and through the jungle now it was halted, almost destroyed by the poisoned arrows of the savage Bansuto tribe, ahead of them many perils and behind them came Tarzan and the Golden Lion, seeking the man who might have been his twin brother in looks -- though hardly in courage!

When he was only an infant, his mother died, and his father was killed by Kerchak, leader of the ape tribe by whom John was adopted. He gets the ape name Tarzan and he is being raised in the African jungles by the Mangani great apes. Tarzan later experiences civilization only to largely reject it and return to the wild as a heroic adventurer. Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was an American writer best known for his creations of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres. Beside Tarzan's adventures, Burroughs also wrote popular science fiction and fantasy stories involving Earthly adventurers transported to various planets (notably Barsoom, Burroughs's fictional name for Mars, and Amtor, his fictional name for Venus), lost islands, and into the interior of the hollow earth in his Pellucidar stories, as well as westerns and historical romances.

Through the tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs, generations of readers have thrilled to the adventures of Lord Greystoke (aka John Clayton, but better known as Tarzan of the Apes). In this biography Philip José Farmer pieces together the life of this fantastic man, correcting Burroughs's errors and deliberate deceptions and tracing Tarzan's family tree back to other extraordinary figures, including Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, the Scarlet Pimpernel, Doc Savage, Nero Wolfe, and Bulldog Drummond. Tarzan Alive offers the first chronological account of Tarzan's life, narrated in careful detail garnered from Burroughs's stories and other sources. From the ill-fated voyage that led to Greystoke's birth on the isolated African coast to his final adventures as a group captain in the RAF during World War II, Farmer constructs a comprehensive and authoritative account. Farmer's assertion that Tarzan was a real person has led him to craft a biography as well researched and compelling as that of any character from conventional history.
