Perfect for fans of Marisa de los Santos and Allison Winn Scotch, Samantha Wilde’s new novel is a funny and heartfelt look at friendship, marriage, and the dynamics of modern motherhood. Nora and Annie have been best friends since kindergarten. Nora, a shy English teacher at a quaint New England boarding school, longs to have a baby. Annie, an outspoken stay-at-home mother of two, longs for one day of peace and quiet (not to mention more money and some free time). Despite their very different lives, nothing can come between them—until Cynthia Cypress arrives on campus. Cynthia has it all: brains, beauty, impeccable style, and a gorgeous husband (who happens to be Nora’s ex). When Cynthia eagerly befriends Nora, Annie’s oldest friendship is tested. Now, each woman must wrestle the green-eyed demon of envy and, in the process, confront imperfect, mixed-up family histories they don’t want to repeat. Amid the hilarious and harried straits of friendship, marriage, and parenthood, the women may discover that the greenest grass is right beneath their feet. Praise for I’ll Take What She Has “Samantha Wilde has a dry wit, a big heart, and a sharp eye that doesn’t miss a trick. I’ll Take What She Has is a smart and funny behind-the-scenes look at private school life and the grass-is-always-greener friendships of three women who, like most of us, would have fabulous lives if only they could get out of their own way!”—Claire Cook, bestselling author of Must Love Dogs and Wallflower in Bloom “With wit, compassion, and a keen ear for dialogue Wilde explores issues of insecurity, envy, young motherhood, and friendship in this fast-paced work.”—Publishers Weekly “With her easy, amusing narrative style, Wilde speaks the language of women and communicates what lies in their hearts. Add to that a strong, genuine plot with expressive, intelligent yet flawed characters at the center, and you have a gem of a read.”—RT Book Reviews “A poignant, thoroughly entertaining tale of friends, family, and wanting more.”—Valerie Frankel, author of Four of a Kind “Wilde delivers an honest, unflinching, and emotional look at the messy unpredictability of both motherhood and friendship.”—Lisa Verge Higgins, author of The Proper Care and Maintenance of Friendship From the Trade Paperback edition.

Her head is spinning faster than a whirling dervishs. Yet, Christen, the owner of the Galleria Persian Arts in the New Orleans iconic French Quarter, is caught up in doing what is fun versus doing what is right. Her intuition is good; it tells her that this man might be trouble. He looks like Omar Shariff, knows Persian rugs, and acts like he can sell a lot of them. Her sensual nature wants to hire him on the spot. Her Catholic Blessed Mother upbringing cautions her to be careful. The Unraveling of the Rug Merchants recounts the undoing of 44- year-old Polish Catholic Christen Janizeski, by hiring Jamshid Khafezi, an exiled Sufi mystic and Moslem rug merchant as her manager. Booklovers take a metaphorical magic carpet ride around the Islamic World where they are privy to honest bohemian introspective chit chat from paradoxical cultural perspectives. They meet exotic characters when they are taken into native homes and bustling bazaars where they listen in on indigenous conversations and intuit the consequence of forbidden love and sexual intrigue. Readers witness a collision of remarkable characters and worlds as this is at once an extraordinary story of two people who are about to discover who they really are and an unforgettable look into the impact of poor Ohio Valley coal mining country and the stunning culture of Islam.

He’s caught in a rip tide off Kuta Beach in Bali: no one’s on shore to help; every time he cries out, the waters rush over him. Tony Speed is in free-fall. Near 30, a victim of the budget ax, he’s lost his first real job as an Instructor at a southern university. Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and John Lennon—the gods of his idolatry--all tell him to get out, just go. So he takes his life’s savings and chases his Japanese girlfriend to Tokyo. But Yoshiko dances to a different drummer, and before he knows it, Speed’s in Southeast Asia, knocked silly by a rip tide. That rip is the book’s central metaphor, as Speed travels through Asia and the “Lucky Country” of Australia, watching the fragmented pieces of his life play out like a kaleidoscope. Set in Bali and Australia, with flashbacks to Japan and the States, A Fine Excess is a novel that reads fast and goes deep—an On the Road for the new millennium--with a foot in this floating world, and a wing in the spiritual realms of East and West. It's a book about the adventure of discovery, integrating our whirling selves with the mirroring chaos and beauty of the world. What’s Speed searching for, what does he want? An affirming vision… wholeness…someone and some place to hold onto. It’s the mid-70s, after all. Vietnam, Watergate, a worldwide recession form the crazy quilt he’s woven into. He joins Aussie friends Peter and Kay in hurricane-ravaged Darwin where he’s harassed by the local bar fauna—“Ockers.” With fellow wayfarer Dacy, he hitches a ride through the outback in a Holden station wagon piggybacking a lorry, the red dust of the Simpson Desert clogging every pore. In Coober Pedy, the mole-like denizens burrow into caves to escape the heat while ferreting night and day for fire-lit opals. It’s all Dante-esque—and exhilarating! Speed finds work in Adelaide, picking grapes for a winery. He settles in for a month of love-making with Colleen, a funny, pretty Canadian scientist who despises Aussie men. Tempted to linger, Speed finds he can’t shake the memory of Jeri, the American woman he met in Indonesia who is now in Sydney. On his way to her, he stops off in Melbourne, where he re-joins Peter and Kay. They’re in the process of breaking up, and Speed gets caught in the inevitable rip. A couple of weeks later, he’s keeling into Jeri’s orbit. But she’s involved with two other men. Only when he can recognize the quiet charm of Carol, Jeri’s reticent roommate, does Speed find peace and love. He finally gets his revelation, his “Zen slap,” through Dennie, Carol’s quadriplegic cousin. In the sad and luminous figure of Dennie, the suffering, acceptance, gratitude and grace at the core of the religious traditions of the East and West finally converge. All journeys are beginnings. This is a book about beginning.

DIVERSE VISIONS BOOK TWO: subtitle DIASPORA INTRODUCTION The inspiration that triggered the poems in Diaspora is the perspective of the African immigrant to Europe, or to wherever in the western world. Those immigrants, who decided to move or not to move, leave behind their nations, families and loved ones. The reasons vary though, for political, economic, social or religious. Diaspora is a dream that may either come true or dissipate into thin air, when they arrive to their destinations. Great expectations fail and things start falling apart. The categories of Diaspora are two or more but the basic are those who come, without being literate or any professional qualification. These men and women end up working either legally or illegally. Most work on construction sites or physical hard labour jobs. Thus they are the labour or manpower brain drain. The other sector is those who come to further their academic education but eventually stay to work abroad. Another subsector of them comes already trained in different fields, such as doctors, teachers, engineers and nurses. Their reasons to stay are mostly political or economic. For some, to go home may signify persecution by corrupt, dictatorship governments or regimes. Thus I call them the elite brain drain from developing countries to Europe or the west developed and mature democracies. Diaspora denotes what these people experience and undergo, betwixt an exodus of mass migration. By the author Amadou BH Sey

Winner of the PEN USA Literary Award for Translation Mahmoud Darwish was that rare literary phenomenon: a poet both acclaimed by critics as one of the most important poets in the Arab world and beloved by his readers. His language—lyrical and tender—helped to transform modern Arabic poetry into a living metaphor for the universal experiences of exile, loss, and identity. The poems in this collection, constructed from the cadence and imagery of the Palestinian struggle, shift between the most intimate individual experience and the burdens of history and collective memory. Brilliantly translated by Fady Joudah, If I Were Another—which collects the greatest epic works of Darwish's mature years—is a powerful yet elegant work by a master poet and demonstrates why Darwish was one of the most celebrated poets of his time and was hailed as the voice and conscience of an entire people.
