Imagine hiking along a wooded trail in Virginia and stumbling upon the stone foundation of a crumbled building, the wooden slats of the walls caved in, the ironwork of the hinges still dangling on the burned out door. This discovery piques your interest—what is this? What’s its significance? How can you find out? Enter Hiking through History Virginia: Exploring the Old Dominion’s Past by Trail. The hiking guidebook, which profiles forty hikes (all trails, of varying degrees of difficulty), goes beyond simply stating miles and directions and GPS coordinates for each hike to include rich descriptions of the history underfoot. From Civil War Battlefields like the Petersburg National Battlefield to early settlement sites like Henricus from the 1600s, this book is the perfect companion for any hiker with an interest in history. Make no mistake—this is a hiking book first and foremost, complete with rich photos and detailed maps, but with added extras and sidebars detailing enough historical information to satisfy every curiosity along the way.

Winner of a National Outdoor Book Award Honorable Mention, Hiking Virginia is indispensable for exploring the Commonwealth. Authors Bill and Mary Burnham breath fresh air into popular Virginia destinations, and explore commonly overlooked yet equally dramatic hikes. Explore the history of a young American nation; watch stories of lost cultures come alive; and imagine the ghosts of Indian raiders, moonshiners, and outlaws haunting the backcountry routes of the past. Packed with notes on plants, trees, and geology, plus a list of local attractions and "good eats and sleeps" for the weary hiker, Hiking Virginia covers the Commonwealth's outdoors from the sea shores to the mountain slopes, past and present. Also included is a special section detailing the Appalachian Trail through Virginia, taking thru-hikers along the six-week route from Damascus, Virginia to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Inside readers will find: full-color photos, detailed color maps, accurate route profiles showing the ups and downs of each hike, tips on equipment, trip planning, hiking with dogs and children, accurate directions, difficulty ratings, trail contacts, and more.

The ridges and valleys of the Appalachians once were the frontier of colonial America. Today their centerline is the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, a hiking and backpacking beacon to the world. In between, its route became one of many routes to freedom for the enslaved in the South and mid-Atlantic states and then a series of mountaintop battlefields. Some argue it began here, with John Brown's raid on the armory at Harpers Ferry, the psychological halfway point of the legendary footpath. Hiking through History documents battle sites along the Trail from east Tennessee to the retreat lines from Gettysburg, Underground Railroad sites from Harpers Ferry north to Maine, and a singular Trailside network of farms bought postwar by former slaves in central Virginia, their ruins still visible. Each site is illustrated with period photographs and a suggested hike, complete with four-color map and detailed description. In the four years of the Civil War, hundreds died atop denuded ridges along what is now a peaceful, forested path for recreatrion and reflection. The intent of this volume is to provide to hikers a sense of what happened here more than 150 years ago and provoke them to reimagine the scenery and think about their past as Americans. Foreword by Brian B. King.

"West Virginia native and long-distance hiker and author Leonard M. Adkins has walked more than 400 miles to uncover 50 hikes available to outdoor travelers of all ages and abilities. From rugged Allegheny Mountain summits to the banks of the Ohio River, the author leads you to hikes beside rushing streams and crashing waterfalls, up to windswept plains whose flora and fauna resemble that of Canada's, and into hill country's hidden valleys. Other journeys traverse rocky mountain crests, reveal far-reaching vistas, travel miles of nearly level rail-trails, and explore historic sites and Civil War battlefields. One hike passes by a listing wooden shelter once used by President Lyndon B. Johnson; another goes into a series of tunnels cut through the mountains. The shortest hike is 0.5 mile, the longest is a challenging multiday backpacking trek on the state's premier long-distance route, the Allegheny Trail. An overview chart provides information on the 50 hikes at a glance, making it easy to choose the hike that's right for you. Each hike description includes trailhead directions, total distance, hiking time, vertical rise, a detailed account of the route, and a topographic map"-- Publishers website.

The Preservation of History in Fairfax County, Virginia presents an overview of one urban county's efforts to retain its historic and archaeological sites in the face of increasing developmental pressures during the past thirty-five years. It provides a thorough review of historical development in the county as well as practical guidance on how decisions were developed. Written by two distinguished historians, Ross and Nan Netherton, who were part of the process from the beginning, this study presents a perspective which only familiarity with its successes and failures can bestow. This book is both a historical survey and a "how-to" manual for government officials and preservationists.
