Eliseo Torres, known as "Cheo," grew up in the Corpus Christi area of Texas and knew, firsthand, the Mexican folk healing practiced in his home and neighborhood. Later in life, he wanted to know more about the plants and rituals of curanderismo. Torres's story begins with his experiences in the Mexican town of Espinazo, the home of the great curandero El Niño Fidencio (1899-1939), where Torres underwent life-changing spiritual experiences. He introduces us to some of the major figures in the tradition, discusses some of the pitfalls of teaching curanderismo, and concludes with an account of a class he taught in which curanderos from Cuernavaca, Mexico, shared their knowledge with students. Part personal pilgrimage, part compendium of medical knowledge, this moving book reveals curanderismo as both a contemplative and a medical practice that can offer new approaches to ancient problems. From Curandero ". . . for centuries, rattlesnakes were eaten to prevent any number of conditions and illnesses, including arthritis and rheumatism. In Mexico and in other Latin American countries, rattlesnake meat is actually sold in capsule form to treat impotence and even to treat cancer. Rattlesnake meat is also dried and ground and sprinkled into open wounds and body sores to heal them, and a rattlesnake ointment is made that is applied to aches and pains as well."

The practice of curanderismo, or Mexican American folk medicine, is part of a historically and culturally important health care system deeply rooted in native Mexican healing techniques. This is the first book to describe the practice from an insider's point of view, based on the authors' three-year apprenticeships with curanderos (healers). Robert T. Trotter and Juan Antonio Chavira present an intimate view of not only how curanderismo is practiced but also how it is learned and passed on as a healing tradition. By providing a better understanding of why curanderos continue to be in demand despite the lifesaving capabilities of modern medicine, this text will serve as an indispensable resource to health professionals who work within Mexican American communities, to students of transcultural medicine, and to urban ethnologists and medical anthropologists.

Don Blossom, a certified pediatrician for more than four decades, relives a personal journey from childhood through a long career in medicine. Occasionally, over the course of his career, he came to think of himself as a curandero, a folk healer who serves Native Americans and Hispanic America. Before he found his calling, however, Blossom had to survive his youthful exuberance including a tour overseas as a US Army Special Forces paratrooper. After several months, he yearned to catch a glimpse of an American girl. He got his chance when he was honorably discharged and met Ellie, a beguiling lass from New Orleans. In love, he faced a future in medical school and other obstacles before realizing his dream of becoming a doctor. Blossom succeeded, becoming a doctor in private practice in a small New Mexico community, just as the field of medicine experienced some serious changes. He recalls his many adventures in medical diagnosis, the demands of a professional career in pediatrics, and the evolution of his private and family life. In his manuscript Blossom targets physicians & nurses, healthcare administrators & medical educators, parents & teachers, as well as the evolution of healthcare in America. Explore the daily life and responsibilities of a pediatrician working in a small town and join Blossom as he reminisces about his experiences in Alaska, Russia, New Zealand and beyond in Curandero: A Physicians Life Journey.

The evil Mexican drug cartels sweeping across the Rio Grande into the isolated ranch lands of West Texas are on a violent collision course with Quaid, the innocent young crack-shot cowboy and with the wise old desert shaman, Achai. This is a classic action drama set in the old West, but in the 21st Century. The location, the isolated desert ranch lands of the Trans Pecos region of West Texas, along the Rio Grande border with Mexico. Here the ranchers live a lifestyle in many ways unchanged since the days when the gun was the law. The people clinging to their traditional lifestyle at the edge of the desert rely upon their horses, their knowledge of the wild and in some cases their closely guarded, shamanist powers. The drug running tidal wave sweeping up from Mexico, driven by ruthless and violent cartels, intrudes on this slow and guarded way of life. A violent confrontation is inevitable. The story centres on Quaid, a young man living on his father's ranch with his widowed mother and an elderly Mexican shaman or curandero. Their lives are changed forever by the intrusion of the Cartels. Quaid's naive interference with the activities of the drug cartels makes him their target. He has something that the cartel desperately wants to recover and nothing is allowed to stand in their way. Quaid is forced to rely upon his wits, his skill with a rifle, his faithful horse and the timely intervention of Achai, the wise old shaman, in order to escape with his life. Achai summons his ancient wisdom through the use of hallucinogenic plants and his deep connection to the wild creatures of the canyons. Quaid's actions lead to violence and bloodshed and the loss of innocent life, but also to a test of loyalty and a rite of passage for the young man. This is a fast-paced modern story with a unique hook to the plot and an outcome that would fit right in with the best stories in the Western genre.
