"Matt, I couldn't marry him … it's you I love." Even as she said the words, Darrell knew their situation was hopeless. Darrell Anderson's life had been going along reasonably well until she met Matthew Lawford. He was the most attractive, most unforgettable man she'd ever known. Now, the two of them were deeply—and disturbingly—in love. For Matthew was married—unhappily, but married none the less. Darrell knew she'd accept any terms he offered … but was there any chance for happiness even if she did!

Koasati Dictionary is one of the first modern dictionaries ever published of a language of the Muskogean language family, whose speakers formerly occupied mostøof the southeastern United States. When first met by Europeans in the sixteenth century, the Koasati people were living in Eastern Tennessee. In the early eighteenth century they moved to south-central Alabama and eventually migrated to present-day Louisiana, Texas, or Oklahoma. Today their language survives in southwestern Louisiana, where it is still spoken by the majority of tribal members living there. Published three years after Kimball?s richly detailed Koasati Grammar, this dictionary is the second of three monographs to result from his fifteen-year study of the language. In this work, Kimball provides the user with a substantial introduction outlining Koasati grammar and then organizes dictionary entries into two parts, the first arranged from Koasati to English and the second from English to Koasati. In addition to the English translations, entries in the Koasati-English section include sample sentences that illustrated word usage as well as illuminate traditional Koasati culture. Most of these sentences are taken from narrative texts. The dictionary, like Kimball?s grammar of Koasati, is an indispensable reference work for linguists, anthropologists, and historians?indeed, for anyone interested in the native culture history of the southeastern United States.

Winner of the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Fiction: An “audacious and compelling” novel of one man trying to outrun the horrors of the Rwandan genocide (The Washington Post). A Kansas City Star, Seattle Times, and BookBrowse Best of the Year Pick Running the Rift follows the progress of Jean Patrick Nkuba from the day he knows that running will be his life to the moment he must run to save his life. A naturally gifted athlete, he sprints over the thousand hills of Rwanda and dreams of becoming his country’s first Olympic medal winner in track. But Jean Patrick is a Tutsi in a world that has become increasingly restrictive and violent for his people. As tensions mount between the Hutu and Tutsi, he holds fast to his dream that running might deliver him, and his people, from the brutality around them. Winner of the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, Naomi Benaron has written a stunning and gorgeous novel that—through the eyes of one unforgettable boy—explores a country’s unraveling, its tentative new beginning, and the love that binds its people together. “A profound display of imagination and empathy. Benaron writes like Jean Patrick runs, with the heart of a lion.” —The Dallas Morning News “A novel full of unspeakable strife but also joy, humor, and love.” —O, The Oprah Magazine “This is truly fearless writing: ambitious, beautiful, unapologetically passionate.” —Barbara Kingsolver, New York Times–bestselling author “A culturally rich and unflinching story of resilience and resistance.” —Chicago Tribune “Benaron accomplishes the improbable feat of wringing genuine loveliness from unspeakable horror.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Following his brilliant portrait of Maurice Ravel, Jean Echenoz turns to the life of one of the greatest runners of the twentieth century, and once again demonstrates his astonishing abilities as a prose stylist. Set against the backdrop of the Soviet liberation and post–World War II communist rule of Czechoslovakia, Running— a bestseller in France—follows the famed career of Czech runner Emil Zátopek: a factory worker who, despite an initial contempt for athletics as a young man, is forced to participate in a footrace and soon develops a curious passion for the physical limits he discovers as a long-distance runner. Zátopek, who tenaciously invents his own brutal training regimen, goes on to become a national hero, winning an unparalleled three gold medals at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and breaking countless world records along the way. But just as his fame brings him upon the world stage, he must face the realities of an increasingly controlling regime. Written in Echenoz’s signature style—elegant yet playful—Running is both a beautifully imagined and executed portrait of a man and his art, and a powerful depiction of a country’s propagandizing grasp on his fate.

Thousands of years before this story begins, in a world rife with war, savagery and power, a prophesy was made, one amongst many of that time. Then it was forgotten, but prophesies have a tendency to be forgotten, do they not? Yet, prophesies have a better chance of being realised when forgotten than when the two legs try to favour it or to mingle with its natural development. This scroll tells the story of how our family became involved with its onset, development, and conclusion. This is my saga. I almost started this scroll with the classical once upon a time, but this story is on-going, and you too will be part of it, writing your own saga in time. Sons, Daughters, learn that the past may guide, but must never stifle your thinking. Nothing we hold dear is permanent, and this is right, for permanence equals stability, leading to disappearance. Let us begin our trip... Uncle Silver Wolf Nearly eight thousand years after the Nuclear Cataclysm threw back civilization to the cave age, society is fighting its way up the ladder again. The political structure matches the Middle Age, with Kingdoms, Trade Orders, Roads of Initiation, and Symbols of Mastery. There exists one huge historical difference: Each six-year old Child is taken from home by the Diviners, travels for a year to get hands-on work experience before being incorporated into an Order for life. Another issue is the effects of the Cataclysm on life: numerous mutant life-forms have emerged, while huge swaths of the world have become inhospitable. Thus begins the story of Harold, Companion Ironsmith, and how he discovers his unexpected heritage.
