Letitia holds nothing more dear than the papers that prove she is no longer a slave. They may not cause white folks to treat her like a human being, but at least they show she is free. She trusts in those words she cannot read--as she is beginning to trust in Davey Carson, an Irish immigrant cattleman who wants her to come west with him. Nancy Hawkins is loathe to leave her settled life for the treacherous journey by wagon train, but she is so deeply in love with her husband that she knows she will follow him anywhere--even when the trek exacts a terrible cost. Betsy is a Kalapuya Indian, the last remnant of a once proud tribe in the Willamette Valley in Oregon territory. She spends her time trying to impart the wisdom and ways of her people to her grandson. But she will soon have another person to care for. As season turns to season, suspicion turns to friendship, and fear turns to courage, three spirited women will discover what it means to be truly free in a land that makes promises it cannot fulfill. This multilayered story from bestselling author Jane Kirkpatrick will grip readers' hearts and minds as they travel with Letitia on the dusty and dangerous Oregon trail into the boundless American West.

Although nearly 7 million people live along the southeast Florida coast, scarcely three generations ago it was a wild, lawless frontier ruled by bears, snakes and alligators. But when a lighthouse was built at Jupiter Inlet in 1860, it became the hub for hunters, surveyors, Civil War blockade runners, Union gunboats and pioneer farmers. A Light in the Wilderness, with over seventy rare photos, maps and letters, tells how southeast Florida survived the catharsis of the Civil War, how the lighthouse at Jupiter drew the first families into its orbit, and how it became a key link in the steamboat-railroad path that led people to the "Garden of Eden."

Joseph A. Sittler (1904-1987) was one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century, distinguished for his pioneering work in ecology and for his preeminence as a preacher. He gave both the Beecher Lectures at Yale and the Noble Lectures at Harvard. As the "preacher's theologian," Sittler approached the interpretation of Scripture with a clear understanding of current critical scholarship, but also in the freedom of the gospel at the center of Scripture and with the humility of a theologian of the cross. In following the trajectory of the text into the preaching situation he gave a lively, timeless, and eloquent expression to the fact that the interpretation of texts is in the service of proclamation. This collection of readings from Sittler's rich legacy contains a great many presentations and sermons that have never before appeared in print. Theologically serious preaching, close attention to language, engagement with the best of sacred and secular culture, and a deep respect for the text, all characteristics of Sittler's work, are the sort of features that continue to edify. They remain as benchmarks for good preaching even as styles and contexts evolve.

For many years now there has been an upsurge in revelation stories and alternative viewpoints on man's history. People such as Graham Hancock and Lawrence Gardner have brought to light many new ideas and many new problems. Now there is a new theory which is all-encompassing and clearly brings into focus a more sinister reason behind the emergence of civilisation. In his theory on Atlantis Graham Hancock is receiving much admiration and academic acclaim. Standard academic thought is more towards the spontaneous eruption of civilisation across the globe, with little or no explanation of why there are so many similarities between the cultures. Now, Philip Gardiner, in his new book THE SHINING ONES is set to turn even this upon its head. The theory is so simple that it begs the question, why has it not been thought of before? The reason for universal similarity of architecture, language, art, travel and religious belief is quite simply an ancient and secret religious brotherhood who have hidden themselves deep within the symbols, ciphers and codes of our ancient texts for hundreds of years. They held a secret knowledge and power base which spread with them across the globe. The very title that they have given themselves is hidden within the standard text and religious books we use every day -- The Shining Ones. Put like this, the whole thing can sound like an X-Files conspiracy theory. However the author has invested huge amounts of time and energy checking, researching and seeking the advice of academics. Now the theory is attracting the attention of historians who can see that the patterns are as subtle as this author proposes. The fact is, this theory does explain away all the problems with dating and variations that people such as Hancock have come up against. Many academics and especially Egyptologists are now turning to this way of thinking and with Gardiners spirit and broad knowledge in history and language the history of the ancients and the secrets that they hold are becoming more clear. There are of course dissenters. The author has been accosted for his standpoint and there are still those hardened academics and even non-academics who refuse to even listen. However, there is a major TV documentary in pre-production stages and with interviews planned across the nation on radio and TV the message may soon be accepted as a credible theory.

Barbara E. Robinson was born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania in 1936 and attended schools there and in Philadelphia. She is a mother and grandmother and spent the majority of her adult life in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she raised her children, and later in Noblesville, Indiana. Her interest in the Tabernacle began after doing research on the subject for a presentation at a church retreat. Volunteering in the "Young Life" ministry brought her to visit Tabernacle Presbyterian Church or, as it is better known, "TAB." It was their outstanding contribution to their inner city neighborhood and their children's community-wide sports program that influenced her to become a member. After joining TAB her interest in the Tabernacle in the Wilderness grew and eventually led to her leading a class on the subject. While residing in Indianapolis she furthered her study of the Bible by attending the Bethel Bible Study and subsequently teaching the class. The years spent volunteering in the church's "Open Door" soup kitchen at the church is a treasured time. The pin she received for her one thousand hours of volunteering at Riley Children's Hospital, Indianapolis, is her most valuable jewel. Her move to Noblesville enabled her to pursue two other interests-historic preservation and gardening. After restoring an 1870's Victorian Italianate home to accommodate her business, she won an award from Ball State University Architectural School for its adaptation from residence to business. Noblesville has a special place in her heart. She became involved in the local historical society, the local Habitat for Humanity, and was a charter member of the board of the Noblesville Main Street program. Her interest in gardening led to an herb shop with an herb garden, enabling her to have a "Bible Garden" and to give talks about gardening and the symbolic herbs of the Bible. Several visits to England's great gardens furthered her interest in and knowledge of gardening-especially orangeries. Her article on English Orangeries was published in The Royal Oak Newsletter, Americans in alliance with the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Barbara now resides in a Victorian home she restored in Wheeling, West Virginia and is a member of the oldest church in the city, First Presbyterian. She also holds membership in the Victorian Old Town Association, the historical society, Friends of Wheeling, and the Civic Garden Club.
